Good for preliminary testing. Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5
I bought this device to test for moisture and dampness in materials around the house. By profession I am a home inspector. Professional moisture meters are several hundred dollars so a $30 moisture meter was enticing. My first impression was that it was a plastic toy and not a tool. HOWEVER, it was very accurate when used in conjunction with a professional moisture meter. I take it with me to home inspections and read floors around sinks and toilets. Basically, I am verifying what I see as a moisture problem already. It is difficult to push the probes deep into many materials and especially walls or other surfaces were pinholes would warrant defacing a persons home.
Overall, I like this meter for reading surfaces showing a moisture concern. It read concrete well. I read a damp towel and a stick with fair accuracy. If your goal is to determine moisture in a basic, "I think there is moisture", this will work fine. If you need 99.9% accuracy and the surface is hiding possible moisture, I would recommend a professional meter or verification with one along with this device.

Inacurate reading rendered it useless Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5
We had house leaks and needed to continue to monitor the moisture level in the wood (ceiling) and drywall. My home inspector recommended this one as an inexpensive alternative to his $400+ Surveymaster moisture reader. However, this device was so inaccurate that made me doubt its usefulness.

Off the dry wall, when the reading from Surveymaster was 22%, this one's was 15%. Two locations off the ceiling wood, Surveymaster vs. Sonin were 18% vs. 8%, and 12% vs 8%. All the readings were done on the same day by my experienced home inspector who used the devices in the exact same location w/ exact same direction (when pining into the ceiling) and tried to use the same force to minimize the error bar caused by mishandling.

Sonin's readings were the same 8% even though there was a 10% difference in the readings from Surveymaster. 8%-12% would be considered ok for wood, but 18% is not. For example, mold remediation company would dry the ceiling wood below 16% before they put on the final coat. W/ such inaccuracy, I found it nearly impossible to have a good assessment on the situation and to take necessary actions.

Another drawback of the product: the pins are not sharp at all comparing to the Surveymaster's. In test, the pins couldn't penetrate into some plywood area under the roof, and hence couldn't get any readings.

In short, it is cheap for a reason. Use it w/ bucket load of grain of salt.

The product description talks about the "contact probes" and it is described as "pinless" but it has two big pins that you poke into things to measure moisture, leaving holes in your drywall.

Great Product, some flaws Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5
I used it to detect water in walls. works great. Compared to the price of $300+ units that I saw, this is signficantly cheaper. Some of the issues mentioned in other reviews are true. The unit is a little flimsy. If you are not careful, you could break the prongs (actually, where the prongs attach to the unit). But as long as you are careful in storing it, it should be fine.

The battery issue is also valid. It does not have an auto shut off. So, it will drain battery if accidently left on. Also, the battery switchcan be easily switched to on while the unit is stored. So, while storing I simply unplug the battery and leave it disconnected. A little irritating but ok.

One thing I found useful while using this unit: To check whether unit is working correctly (battery ok, etc.), first I put it in battery check mode. The needle should move all the way right. Then, switch to moisture check and touch both prongs with your fingers. This should show high humidity. Then, the unit is ready to use.

Hope that the humidity level you find with this unit is in safe range!!
