Big Saw For Big Cuts Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
I purchased this saw to cut several 4x4 landscaping timbers to outline a driveway along with a variety of mulch beds. This saw is a beast. The two handles are definitely needed to control it. Positioning the saw to begin the cut and turning it on in conjunction with depressing the safety button is definitely a challenge as other reviewers have stated. However, once you develop a technique it becomes less burdensome. The saw does not have a soft start feature and will jerk when first turned on. It also is equipped with an electric brake which performs as expected. The 32 tooth stock blade is OK for rough cuts. The blade stabilizer is effective in preventing excessive runout. With the stock blade the saw will bog down if you force the cut and not let the tool do its job. But it still is a fine tool for making cuts on wood with such large dimensions. I constructed some jigs to make the alignments of my 90 and 45 degree cuts much easier. Please view this video to see the saw in action using one of these easy to make jigs. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/makita-beam-saw-cutting-with-jig/1638302903. If you have some large timbers or landscaping ties to cut, I would definitely recommend this saw.

Great for Log Home building! Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
My husband purchased this for building our log home... it was the only tool that could cut through the logs in 2 passes. My husband is quite picky and he was very pleased with it.

This is the only way to make smooth cuts on 6x material. I don't have too much trouble with the safety button as others have mentioned. A clamp down guide is a must for such a big saw. It kicks when starting so I hold it slightly away from the cut when turning it on. I find that covering the wood with a piece of wax paper makes it much easier to slide.

I use these type of reviews to make buying decisions,so should pass on my thoughts. Great saw for timber beams. I did get better results with a freud carbide tip, thin kerf blade, but that is only to be expected versus non carbide blade. great ergonomics for holding saw. It is kind of heavy, but really just a large circular saw. The only issue, which is prob issue with any large saw, is that the act of setting the saw down, pushes on the blade adjustment plate, and after 30 or so cuts, needs a slight re squaring of the blade. Not a big deal, but i am sure it happens because of the heft of the saw. take a second and readjust and back in business with square cuts.

BIG DOG WOOD HOG Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
Took a chance at a garage sale. Picked up a used one for $50. All it needed was some new brushes. Got those from a local service center, installed them and WHOOF, it sprang to life! A little cleaning and some oil, it is good-as-new despite the obvious brutal abuse it endured.

What a saw! Strong as a Caterpillar backhoe. Smooth bearings. Stable, vibration free and impressively quiet for all its muscle. It draws enough current that it will drain other tools on the same generator circuit or dim lights in sub-code wired houses. I got the manual online. They say it actually delivers 1800 watts. I believe it!!!

I sometimes install a smaller 12" blade for fine work. That decreases blade speed and increases torque. That's no problem except for the blade guard, which must then be operated manually.

For timber framing, I outfitted it with a wider & longer base made of clear 3/8ths" polycarbonate. The previous owner must have dropped it, because the original metal base-plate was severely bent. Routed an insert-slot in the new plate to accept 1/4" zero-clearance inserts. The inserts also accept glued-in splitters which act as a make-shift riving knife. The wide base makes it MUCH more stable, especially when free-handing. Using a shop-built square and the zero-clearance insert, I get joinery-quality cuts with almost no tear-out. For a saw this large, I recommend those tricks for many applications. They all make this beast safer and more comfortable to handle.

Additionally, I made a portable table saw table with roll-away base. The saw mounts underneath with toggle-clamps and plugs into a safety switch for power. The saw is heavy, so i reinforced the table underneath with a plywood grid ---like a torsion-box--- to prevent cabinet-drop. Now, the installation takes about twenty seconds. BAM! ... instant table-saw!

I took care to perfectly align the base-plate edges co-planer to the saw-blade and the blade is perfectly parallel to my home-made fence. ( Basically a heavy-duty T-square ) I only do 90-degree cuts with this monster, but with a 12" Forrest woodworker-II blade, it cuts as cleanly as any cabinet saw I have ever used. Large Lap-joints, rabbets and dados are accurate, fast and easy.

Certainly, not everyone is interested in these personal modifications, but they do point out important points to any prospective buyer: Because this saw is large, strong and well-made, it is versatile. Even when used and damaged, it can be brought into great working-condition. With its precise, smooth, heavy-duty bearings, power and robust construction, it can do double duty as a home-made table-saw.

Love the fast-brake. That's a good idea for anything that generates this much momentum.

Two design complaints: 1-Safety switch is awkward. 2-The blade is on the wrong side.
When are manufacturers going to stop making clumsy left-handed saws?! ( maybe south-paws feel the same about the rest of the world !;-)

Fix those two things and add dust collection, this would be the coolest saw on Earth.

Other than those quibbles, no complaints.

Knowing what I know now, I would gladly pay retail for a new one. This MF ROCKS!
