DEWALT DC011 Combination Worksite Radio and 7.2-Volt to 18-Volt Pod Style Battery Charger customer reviews:
|
Forget CDs or radio. Think of it as a jobsite iPod amplifier. The DC011 is perfect for amplifying my iPod. I'll answer some of the common complaints from other reviews.
* "No CD player": But who wants to deal with CDs on a jobsite anyway? iPod to the AUX input beats messing with scratched CDs, even in overall ownership cost in the long run.
* "Poor radio": But FM stations are lame anyway; who wants to listen to lowbrow advertising and the same 50 songs on repeat? They shouldn't have included a tuner at all. Having said that, it actually pulls in my local public station quite well, even through a concrete building with lots of steel.
* Sound quality: sure, if i listen to the DC011 somewhere quiet, it's muddy and heavy in the lower midrange. But using the DC011 amidst heavy equipment and power tool use, with hearing protectors in my ears, it actually sounds just right. The ideal setting on the iPod equalizer is "treble boost". This helps keep the sound clear over drilling and sawing noise. The bass and mids are loud enough on their own.
I'm not saying the sound quality is superb, but if it sounded any better the quality would be lost on a noisy jobsite anyway.
* Battery functions: think of the DC011 as a charger. Sure it can also power itself off the battery, but I need my batteries to be powering tools and I'm not going to buy an extra $80 battery just for the radio. So I have no sympathy for battery-life issues here. Though I agree they should have added a power-switch relay to fully disconnect the battery when the unit is shut down.
Bottom line: Buy the DC011 if you need a loud and rugged amplifier for your iPod or other portable mp3 player, which also happens to charge your DeWalt batteries. Don't buy it if you want a battery-powered FM Radio (not to mention CD player) for remote locations without power. There are better options in that case.
I'm giving it 4 stars because I would rather see DeWalt skip the radio tuner entirely and put the savings into sound quality.
Overheats Batteries I am a professional contractor who lives in a small town in North Dakota. This is my second DeWalt DC011 Radio Charger in a years' time. My first radio worked fine the first couple of months that I had it. (Happened to be wintertime and I was using it in a house under construction with only a space heater for heat at the time. By the time summer rolled around, I found that it was blinking the Hot/Cold Pack Delay signal. I found the pack which had been placed in to be extremely hot, and it wasn't when I put it in. Turned out that this pack was ruined, and I thought it was a fluke. It worked OK far a couple of days. Later the same thing happened to another pack which was only a couple of months old.
Since this unit was still under warranty I returned it to an authorized service center. But they did not work on the electronics there, so it was sent to Minneapolis. They didn't find anything wrong. I got the radio back and tried it. Sure enough after a day or two I had a pack overheat. I sent it in again specifically stating that it overheats the battery packs on occasion. (These are packs that never overheated in the regular charger).
About a month later I received a brand new replacement. I thought my problems might be over, but it was the same thing again. As of this writing I am contacting DeWalt to see if there is any way to rectify this problem, and I only keep a weak pack in the radio. I use the regular charger to charge my batteries.
Another awesome Dewalt product. Works perfectly... Only down side is the charger is in the back, so if you have it on a shelf you have to pull it down to swap batteries. Great reception and easy to program.
Worst DeWalt product ever I finally am able to remove this piece of junk from my truck and replace it with something else. I've been a user of DeWalt and their cordless tools for some time, and generally love their products, but this one is a terrible joke. DeWalt makes fantastic tools; they need to buy these junk radios back and put out a better designed jobsite radio.
Nice Radio/Recharger Good quality sound, will run on battery power when unplugged, charges Dewalt cordless tool battery pack when plugged. Didn't come with a battery. It's a must have at the jobsite if you use Dewalt cordless tools.
